On 15 March, the EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Susanna Terstal visited Lithuania at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
On 14 March, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas participated in the third Brussels Conference on "Supporting the Future of Syria and the region”. The conference was co-chaired by the European Union and the United Nations. It aims to mobilize international financial support for the Syrians, for humanitarian aid both inside the country and in the neighboring countries.
On 12 March, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Albinas Zananavičius participated in an informal General Affairs Council (GAC) meeting in Bucharest, Romania. The meeting discussed the multiannual financial framework and the EU’s strategic agenda for the next five years.
On 12 March, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius took part in the Nordic-Baltic (NB8) Meeting of Secretaries of State in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. The meeting discussed regional co-operation, security, transatlantic relations, Brexit, and other topical items on the international agenda.
On 27 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius presented a decision of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo) on non-compliance by Belarus with requirements of the Espoo Convention (NPP construction) in the Government sitting. At the beginning of February, the Meeting of the Parties to the Espoo Convention in Geneva decided that Belarus had violated the Espoo Convention in choosing a construction site for the Ostrovets nuclear power plant (NPP).
On 27 February, the Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė attended the High-Level segment of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva. She reaffirmed Lithuania’s commitment to human rights and expressed strong support for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and her mandate.
On 26 February, the Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė participated in the Ministerial Panel Discussion on violations of human rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war and political hostages of the Russian Federation, which was organized by Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia, on the margins of the High-Level Segment of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
On 24-25 February, the first summit of the European Union and the League of Arab States (LAS) took place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. During the event, high-level representatives discussed opportunities for cooperation between both organizations and a possible response to common challenges: security, armed conflict, illegal migration, humanitarian crises, and climate change. In plenary sessions, the participants discussed regional issues, including the Middle East peace process, crises in Syria, Libya, and Yemen.
On 21-22 February, an informal meeting of trade ministers took place in Bucharest, Romania. The event was attended by the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Albinas Zananavičius. Trade ministers discussed the EU-US trade relations and opportunities for modernizing the World Trade Organization (WTO).
On 19 February Ambassador Sigutė Jakštonytė participated at the first European Union (EU) – Southern African Development Community (SADC) Economic Partnership Agreement Joint Council meeting that took place in Cape Town.
On 18 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius discussed the course of the negotiations and Lithuania’s key interests in the meeting with the EU chief negotiator on Brexit, Michel Barnier in Brussels.
On 18 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius participated in the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, which mainly focused on Ukraine.
On 16 February in Munich, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius participated in a discussion dedicated to the strengthening of security in the Baltic states.
On 13-14 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius participated in the Ministerial to Promote a Future of Peace and Security in the Middle East in Warsaw. The event was held jointly by the United States and Poland.
On 6 February, the Meeting of Ministers of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS took place in Washington, D.C., the United States. In the meeting, representatives of 74 coalition states and 5 international organizations discussed the four year long fight against terrorism in Iraq and Syria, protection of national and religious minorities, responsibility for crimes against humanity, and humanitarian aid for people affected by the conflict in the region.
