- Lithuania became a full member of the International Motor Insurance Card System, so called Green Card on October 15, 2003. Since this date holders of a Green Card can enter Lithuanian territory in a motor vehicle without buying extra insurance.
Motor Insurers' Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania signed agreements with national bureaus of insurers in other countries of the system and fulfilled all the required financial guarantees. Lithuanian insurance companies, members of the Bureau, started selling international policies of third party liability to motor vehicle owners or operators. The said insurers will be responsible for international administration of damages during road accidents.
The System unites 43 countries. The International Compulsory Motor Third Party Liability Insurance System or the Green Card System dates back to the year 1949 when the UN ESC Sub-Committee on Road Transport of Economic Commission for Europe Inland Transport issued Recommendation No. 5. The principal objective was establishment of a uniform and convenient system to assist vehicle drivers in insuring their third party liability against risks caused by the road accident in visited states where insurance of such risks is compulsory.
Further information about Lithuania’s membership in the Green card system can be obtained at the website of the Motor Insurers‘ Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania or:
