Ambassador of Lithuania presented the letters of Credence to the Queen of Denmark

On 9 March 2022 H.E. Ambassador Ms. Asta Radikaitė of the Republic of Lithuania presented letters of Credence to Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Due to the war in Ukraine, special festive elements of the military procession were cancelled.

During the conversation, the Ambassador thanked Her Majesty for Denmark's sincere friendship, great support for Lithuania's integration into the European Union and NATO, and for Her Majesty's personal attention to the independence of the Lithuanian state. The Queen of Denmark shared her lasting impressions from her state visit to Lithuania in 1992 (this was the first visit of the monarch after the restoration of independence), as well as from a short visit to Lithuania in 2009, commemorating the millennium of mentioning the name of our country, where Her Majesty was impressed by Lithuania's achievements.

The Ambassador thanked Denmark for its commitment to the security of the Baltic Sea region and for the decision to strengthen NATO air policing for the ninth time (Denmark sent four F-16 fighter jets to Lithuania in January). There was also a talk about close bilateral economic relations and a large Lithuanian community in Denmark, which has already reached 16,000 this year.

Denmark emphasizes that it never recognized the forced annexation of Lithuania to the Soviet Union. On 28 February 1991 Denmark signed a Joint Protocol on bilateral co-operation with Lithuania and thus it was the second country after Iceland to recognize the restored independence of the Republic of Lithuania. Denmark was the first Western country to sign a visa-free agreement with Lithuania in 1992, and since 1994 it has been the first NATO country to express its unequivocal support for Lithuania's membership in NATO.

H.E. Ms. Asta Radikaitė is the seventh Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Denmark since the restoration of independence in 1990.
