Meeting with Iceland's Parliamentary Speaker
Received by Parliamentary Speaker Steingrimur J. Sigfússon at the Icelandic Parliament - the Alþingi, generally held to be the oldest parliament in the world (founded in 930 about 45 km from its current location in the country's capital). The Speaker was gracious enough to meet with me on a Sunday evening, because M.P.s will fan out across the country on Monday to visit their constituents. Among the topics discussed: support for Lithuania's candidate Andrius Kubilius for Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Nordic-Baltic cooperation, Arctic Council (Iceland assumes the Chairmanship this year).
